Much Ado About Everything

4 spoonful of sugar (comments)

This past week is no different, but somehow I felt busier with the kids. So excuse another one of those bullet-pointed postings again. Just so much to say…

  • The boys are enjoying their 2hour (M-F) daily sports camps and we still managed our weekly museum and library run. The Planetarium was a big hit, and we even enjoyed some astronaut freeze-dried ice cream bars. I promised that we will be visiting again this summer. But first, we have to finish in visiting everything in our list for this summer.

  • Yesterday (Saturday), the boys also started doing tennis for the first time. I really enjoyed watching them learn something new. So far they love the game and the space they are in. How can they not? They were playing at the courts by the lake…and it was just spectacular! To be surrounded with trees, grass, and the lake overlooking a beautiful Chicago skyline, it was bliss. We are looking forward for more of this.

  • My creative writing class was as absorbing as the last one. We are asked to formulate a 60 second commercial (in video or comic strip). We are of course achieving to be effective and yet creative in how we deliver the words. Sounds fun doesn’t it?! My group thought of maybe selling a hair miracle product. A magical cream that work with all types of hair. I’m thinking of many funny situations and wordings already. But again, we are only given 60 seconds and it has to be creatively effective. One thing I am stuck with is giving an actual name to the product. I think it should be something like Sunsilk’s “hairapy”. Any ideas?

  • Lately, this site is being hit big time by lots of PR and marketing peeps. So for PR or MARKETING PEOPLE --- Just know that I love working with you and also know that I run other sites: Chicagonista.com, ChicagonistaLive.com, NYMetropolista.com, TheChicagoMoms.com, and more...

Happy Thoughts

... because God knows I need to focus on positive energies…

  • My 17-month-old daughter is quite a greeter. When a familiar face is in sight, she quickly raises her arms and wave with so much excitement followed by a sweet almost whisper-like Heeeeeeeeeeey! Kind of like that buddha on the left. Her pure delights are infectious. My husband and I are ecstatic to see her be more social.

  • The boys are enjoying their summer activities. They’re enrolled in a 2-hour fitness camp and tennis. We also started our museum rounds for the season. I am amazed and amused in how much they enjoy the art museums.

  • The much-awaited event I  am organizing an event in San Francisco that will be attended by over 100 writers and bloggers is almost here! I am excited and giddy. I’m the main organizer for the swags. This is by far the biggest live event I’ve organized. Other than my past company's monthly marketing events which were considerably much smaller money in budget. So far we have Yahoo, CBS, GM Chrysler, and Typepad as the corporate sponsors and have over 30 product sponsors from Saks 5th, Olay, and the very impressive list goes on (patting my own back here -- hey, I deserve it from all the hard work!). There will be shoes, designer apparels, etc…I will of course share more when the event happens…

  • This past weekend, I attended a well-planned surprise baby shower for Steph. Thanks to the fabulous Ashlee and Arianne. Steph already have 3 boys and is now expecting a girl! Pink and ruffles galore is in sight. Needless to say that she will definitely have her hands even fuller by August. Congrats again Steph! Check out her shower posting here

  • Met some other really great mommy bloggers at the shower and I just want to give them a shout-out. Hello to Mimi’s Toes (Steph’s mom), Crooked Eyebrows , and Milk & Honey – who is also due around the same time Steph is. It was great meeting you guys.

  • My parents love their Aquatic Low Impact exercise class that I sort of forced them into doing…hehe. It helps my mom regain muscle elasticity that she had lost a lot from being diabetic and now stagnant after retiring. She can hardly walk a block without being in pain. The doctor suggested that she exercise more, but walking without assistance is unbearably painful for her. With the aquatic exercise, she’s able to move without pain. So, I’m happy that they are enjoying themselves.

Wow-- writing all this good stuff happening in my lil' life is therapeutic in itself…

Creative Writing Workshop - 1st session

6 spoonful of sugar (comments)

This past thursday night was our first session in a 10 week Creative Writing Workshop I enrolled in. It was one of those things that I have been meaning to do, and this summer has been a cathartic one for me. I actually couldn’t wait to start especially knowing that it will be at the beautiful landmark, The Berger Park House. This mansion is one of the few remaining that once lined Chicago’s Lakefront. I’m not sure exactly what year the building was built and I have a hard time searching even online about this, but the building itself gives out a touch of the roaring 20s grandeur. Think George Gershwin or Bessie Smith blaring from a gramophone in the background. In my head, the olden days are romanticized, so for me it was a perfect place to bring out the creative juices that can hopefully mojo out into some good writing.

As I walked in the building, I was immediately intimidated as soon as I saw that there were only 4 other people sitting in the room. I knew from that moment that this will be one of those “read-what-you-wrote-for-the-class” kind of session and my stomach instantly was filled with butterflies. It's just that I'm not the kind that find pleasure in watching others critique my work out in the open, or vice versa. Critiquing someone else's writing is not my bowl of rice either (or maybe sugar just to be more cohesive with my blog name...hehe). Who am I to critique? What was I thinking taking this class anyway? There were 2 more people that walked in just a few minutes after, but that was basically it.

The instructor Ms. Venice Johnson turned out to be the most personable individual and my classmates are all equally talented, enjoyable and more importantly -- this group of women whom I will have the pleasure with for the next few weeks are all fascinating and non-judgmental. I warmed up with everyone in a few minutes and all else fell into the zone of things. Much to my excitement, the 2-hour session ended quickly. I was amazed. I didn’t know how time swooshed by so fast and even got so much done in one session. I was so immersed with listening, writing, and thinking that I was completely transported somewhere where minutes didn’t exist. I'm looking forward to the next session already.

We finished a couple of exercises and so I will try to share some of it every week. But here is a very simple poetry exercise that we did in 10 minutes. Give each one 2 minutes and please share in the comments section on what you wrote, or leave a link comment if you posted in your site instead. I would also love to post it here too. I’m tagging all that reads this! So, yes that’s you!

Start the sentences/paragraph with the following:
1) I am (name a natural force of nature)
2) I am (an animal)
3) I am (a color)
4) If I were a _____
5) I’m the beginning of _______________ and the end of ____________________.

I of course wrote about Motherhood. Here it is:

"I am a tornado that comes roaring happily through to wake up my children in the morning.
I am the big bear that is big enough for all my three kids to be enveloped with warmth.
I am the color blue that sees the purity and clarity in my children’s eyes.
If I were a hand, then I would be there to hold their hands or pat their backs whichever is needed.
I’m the beginning of my children’s joyous morning and the end of their peaceful night."
I didn't think it sounded very good, but the instructor liked the images I had taken her to as I read it. In the end, I think I painted a pretty good picture of how I truly see and know myself as a Mother.

Some little tips I've also learned or needs sharpening:
  • Always carry a little notebook and pen.
  • It is best to write when emotions are raw.
  • Just keep writing, don't read back and edit until you are completely done.
  • Readers can feel the character you build in writing by the character choices or opinions. Like if you are writing about a 20 year old of today saying "that's swell!" Clearly, this doesn't match because it is a part of a vocabulary from a child of an older era. So having that will give out the feel that the character is already in their 70s - 80s.
  • Remember to use all senses to paint a picture in your story. Like how did the house smell when a character walked in a long-barren house, or what sounds did you hear waking up by a farm...etc...
So this is it for now until next session. I hope that you will enjoy doing the exercise above. Don't forget to share!

Waddling My Way Through

5 spoonful of sugar (comments)

This morning I woke up feeling achy in my lower abdomen. I know this feeling way too well. I’ve had 3 children after all. I’m just right across the street from Northwestern Memorial Hospital so I can easily waddle my way up there when I’m ready to deliver this baby. I was actually sitting with friends pointing at the entrance of the hospital just in case they need to assist me in getting there. Mimi, a good friend who I lost contact with was there. And then I woke up…

I swear I have the weirdest dreams! Let me tell you how my real life played a role into this dream:

  • I have been working out for the first time in a long time. So every muscle is sore, most specially my abs. Oy!

  • Mimi is a friend that I have not talked to in ages. My guilty conscience is bombarding me to get with it and contact her already. I feel terrible that I have not talked to her since I gave birth to my daughter last year! Life got in the way, what can I say. I'm sorry Mims!

  • And last but not least, my Father-In-Law congratulated my husband on our upcoming 4th baby. Pregnant?! Ugh no! A relative got me confused with my pregnant sister-in-law and blurted out that we are pregnant while visiting my in-laws in California. It turned out funnier when I forgot that I told this story to my mom and then my little brother called to congratulate me. hehe...

It seems like this blog is turning into my dream journal. Have you read these yet?

Liar Liar Pants On Fire

5 spoonful of sugar (comments)
This past weekend was one hell of a doozy. Fun in all sense, but I was stripped to the core. Stripped. Last Friday was the last day of school, and much to my excitement I have scheduled a hectic and fun weekend for the 3 kiddos and I (sans husband). What was I thinking?

But I’m alive to tell you about some of it (and the comedy that came along) so here it goes:

In our list, we had Friday night for a surprise birthday day dinner for my older brother in the north side of Chicago, Saturday an uber-early garage sale in a southern suburbia, and on Sunday a graduation party in the farther western suburbs. So as you can see, the only thing I that wasn’t planned was drowning in the east of us. Which is of course in Lake Michigan.

Fast-forwarding to Saturday morning and only after having just a couple of hours of sleep, I dragged the kiddos and about 4 big bins of old toys to hopefully sell in a garage sale. The kids had a riot with their friends in spite of the hot and humid weather. My sleep-deprived baby girl (stimulated from all the morning excitement) eventually took a nice catch-up nap as soon as I took her inside the house for some AC.

Much to my un-readiness, I told the boys to not get dirty and wet because I didn’t bring any change of clothes. Well of course the boys got dirty and of course got wet. And more than once! Naturally, we had to borrow clothes from my gf’s kids. My 5 year old ended up sporting a neon green shirt in the end.

After a full day of garage sale and a whooping $14.00 richer, we took the kids for some ice cream. In the end, an economic crisis has started. I'm down to -$15.00 and what about dinner? Oh, and let’s not forget the gas money! hehe... As soon as we got in the car after visiting Oberweiss’ expensive-made-out-of-gold-cow-ice-cream, all 3 kiddos fell asleep. All is well, so we might as well drive home. Unfortunately, the 30-mile freeway stretch felt like 3 hours. I was literally falling asleep and actually slapped and pinched my cheeks to wake up a couple of times. It got scary and I will never ever drive that tired ever again!

When we got home, each one headed to sleep in the living room floor. 3 hours later we all woke up. My 5 year old asked me if we ever went anywhere that day. He was so confused and so I played with his head saying “ No, remember you came down here this morning and you fell asleep in front of the TV?” He exclaimed that he had some dreams, so I said, “ I bet I know what you dreamt about!” So I recounted tales of the day. The garage sale, the water playing, the ice cream etc… He was ecstatic to hear that I knew ‘em all. He even said, “ oh you know my dream, because you were part of it Mama!” I truly didn't know if he was just playing along.

An hour or so later after dinner, I caught him staring at his neon green shirt. With a big smile on his face saying, “Mama, you lied to me! We did go to the garage sale because I have this tee-shirt on!”

And so there it goes…I am after all a “big fat liar”. Thanks to the kid's Mommy who gave the neon green shirt, I've been exposed.

1 Week Left

5 spoonful of sugar (comments)

School is out after this week and I am thrilled. No more waking up early and ahhhhhhhh HELLO SLEEP-INS! Sleep does make me a happy mama and lots of exercise will make me powerful. I enrolled in a not-too early daily work out that is starting next week. I've also scheduled and enrolled all the kid's summer activities no earlier than 10 am. My plans of grandeur are being out and about practically everyday and resting at home on weekends with Baba (Daddy).

I hope to lose weight, get strong, and have a ton of fun with the family. I can't wait to get started and shed the winter layers off all of us. We want to glow in the bask glory of the sun! Can you tell we're Chicagoans or some other deep cold frozen areas by just saying that? hehe
